How to Remove Old Floor Tiles

How to Remove Old Floor Tiles

Step 1
You can use a long handled floor scraper to prise off old tiles. The strong metal blade can be levered under each tile and pushed along to break the adhesive bond.

Step 2
Remove as many tiles as possible with the scraper and use a stripping knife to tackle awkward areas. Heavier tiles may need to be broken up with a cold chisel and club hammer.

Step 3
Adhesive residue can often be easier to remove by warming the surface with a hot air gun. Keep the gun's nozzel moving and use the stripping knife to clean up the floor. Seal over the remaining adhesive with a PVA sealer before adding your new floor covering.

Tips & Advice
- You can buy non-solvent based cleaners to remove old adhesive. Always wear rubber gloves and open doors and windows when applying.
- If the adhesive is impossible to remove, add a layer of plywood or hardboard over the top and add your new floor covering.
